Our ability to maintain the complete life cycle of Plasmodium falciparum in a lab setting and to create experimental genetic crosses between different parasite strains enables us to ask questions about parasite biology and acquisition and spread of drug resistance. We are using recombinant (“hybrid”) parasites as new substrates for whole parasite-based vaccines as well as new tools to uncover genetic traits guiding mosquito and liver infectivity.
